Elegance and loveliness are the words that came to me just now as I paused to write about the visitation Friday night, December 21, prior to Helen’s funeral on Saturday. When we first entered the room at the funeral home that evening, two things were immediately impressed on my mind:
- The room was filled with people, and
- The fragrance of roses was almost overpowering
A few days ago Jim told me that he had been busy writing thank-you notes for the 45 baskets of flowers and plants that had been sent by people who loved Helen. It was wonderful to have all those flowers. It was also wonderful for Jim to have those thank-you notes to write because it gave him the opportunity to re-connect with those people whom he also loved. Helen would have approved.
Memorial Cards Were Available at the Visitation
Someone put together a slide presentation so we were able to watch various aspects of Helen’s life unfold on the screen. It included what Jim said was one of his favorite pictures of Helen. As he put it: “It showed the city girl from Pittsburgh dressed in overalls standing by a tractor on my parent’s farm with a pitchfork in her hand. At that time she learned that potatoes really did grow in the ground.” It was sweet, very sweet.
The following picture of Helen and Jim's dad on the tractor is another of Jim's favorites.

I see a lot of Rebecca in those pictures of Helen with the pitchfork! How fun!
