The Latest From Jim About Helen

Jim said it is OK to stop by the nursing home if you would like to see Helen. She is sedated much of the time, so she will probably not be able to respond to you. However, if she is awake she will probably be able to hear you.

Hospice is helping, which is much appreciated, but it's still a very difficult time for the family. Jim says he is doing OK, all things considered, but it would be especially nice if people could stop by in the evenings and visit with Jim and Rachel for an hour or so when they are there with Helen. He usually gets there about 7:30.

He recently sent out this e-mail message: "Helen is in a nursing home and is unable to communicate. She will not be able to read her emails and we are trying to clean out her account. We regret that this time is upon us, but rather than emails, please just keep her in your prayers and hope that we can minimize her suffering and discomfort. Thanks…"

Please leave a message here, or write to Helen at the nursing home.

Deaer Jim and Helen,

Helen, you were a warm and wonderful visiting teacher to me in Germany. When I was sick, you brought over chicken soup and we all loved it, but most of all I loved your friendship and encouragement. You help me in so many ways that you did not even know.
Love, gloria

Brother and Sister Vernon,

You two have been such a great example to Tom and I as to what kind of relationship to strive for in our marriage. You two compliment each other very well. You have taught us to see the humor in things, no matter how small or great they may be. I'd be a fool if I said that I wasn't stressed about moving our young family over to Germany. But I know that everything will be okay. I've heard many an account from both of you about the wonderful people that you have met in Germany as well as many of the experiences that you have had as individuals and as a family. I know that everything will work out and it will be the opportunity of a life time. Thank you for your friendship, and for your love and support. -Much love from Jody, Tom, Dallin, Savannah, Logan, Eliza AND Braden Carson.

I love the musical chimes that you made for me. We're going to use them at our ward Christmas party. I'll be thinking of you.

You know how much fun we’d have shopping in East Berlin, but especially the day your gas line was “fooled around with” and we got stuck in the middle of nowhere, and you had brought your little baby with us. We were scared stiff, but we sat there, on the side of the road, in front of a little shop that sold a half aisle of food and three aisles of booze, and it seemed like forever waiting for the army police to come rescue us. We really got to know one another sitting there with the doors locked tight and wondering if we were doomed to spend the night in a “foreign” country. The thing I remember most is that we just laughed the whole time! Your sense of humor “rescued” me many times and I’m the silly person I am now because of your example!

I do have wonderful memories of Helen. I was a young mother just coming back to activity in the church and she as well as many of you who were in Berlin from 1978 to 1981 were instrumental in helping me to be a good mother and daughter of God. I still hang a felt camel on my Christmas tree every year that Helen made for our family. I also remember the wonderful fun trips to East Berlin shopping with her. She sure knew her way around there and where the bargains were (of course they were all bargains over there). She also taught me the ropes at the consignment store by the base. I made money bringing stuff there as well as finding some great deals. She is also the best Relief Society teach I have ever had!

Love,

Brother and Sister Vernon,

What amazing people you are, and what great examples you have been to us ever since we met you.
Sister Vernon, I remember so many wonderful things you did and said. You were always serving those around you, and everything you did received your best efforts. We will always be personally thankful for your time as a Nursery Leader--you made all the difference in the world for Sami as she ventured into what seemed to her to be the great unknown. We are also so grateful for the many times we were able to be in your home. What a zest for life you both have! And you know how to laugh and see the positive--even when it's hard. You've taught us so much. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you both and your family at this time. How blessed we feel to know you.
Love,
Stan, Jennifer, Sami, and Abby Ness

When we moved to Ohio, it was my very first move away from home. You made us feel welcome immediately, and every conversation we ever had made us feel important. You have such a way about you that makes people just love you. That is how we remember you. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. We treasure your friendship and we love you.

We love the Vernons! We have very fond memories of our dinner group, and of the friendship we built with you in Ohio. Helen always seemed to be the first to recognize when Ed was away on trips and the first to sympathize/empathize with me. We were thrilled to have her as Nursery Leader - Kimberlee even called her Grandma, she was so wonderful with her. Right before we moved to Japan, Helen brought over a large platter full of amazing chocolate cake/brownies. The platter had a rickshaw on it - it's now displayed in our home next to other things we've collected from Japan. It reminds us of you and your sweet, cheerful way in all you do. We think of you often and are especially praying for you now.
Love always,
Ed and MaryAnn Anderson

Dear Brother and Sister Vernon,
Thank you so much for your love and service to me and my family. Helen, I will always remember our visits when we went visiting teaching together. You help me to get over the "hump" and enjoy doing this assignment together. Jim, thank you for being our home teacher. You always had a story and thought to help us and me through the hard times. I love you both and my prayers are with you. We shall be together again.
Love, Kaylin

Dear Brother and Sister Vernon,

We want you to know that we love you! We have the happiest of memories when we think of the two of you. I remember feeling so overwhelmed by the whole Air Force world when we first moved to Fairborn. Jim, you came up to me after Sacrament Meeting, gave me a hug and told me that you'd watch out for us. Helen, you were the most wonderful Nursery Leader I've ever seen and I tried to follow your example when I was called to serve as the other Nursery Leader. How fun to serve next to you! My little Matthew was in your nursery and you assured me that he would be fine. And, of course, in your care, he flourished! You also introduced me to carmel Hershey Kisses and I want you to know that that has been a dangerous discovery for me... I will forever think of you each time I unwrap that delicious little treat!

We love and appreciate your positive examples with all that you have gone through. I felt extra close to you when our little Jacob was born and our families kind of struggled along together. Know that we are thinking of you, praying for you, and wishing our Heavenly Father's love and peace to be with you now and always.

Love,
John and Kristine Macdonald
